Driving To Alaska

This summer my wife and I decided to drive to Alaska from Phoenix. We had just finished remodeling a house and deserved a great vacation. So we packed up the Honda and headed to the California coast, then Oregon, Washington, Canada, and finally arrived in Alaska 8 days later. When I tell people we drove there the typical response is, “you did what? That’s crazy!” For some reason most people think what we did was insane, but it was one of the best vacations of my life! It was only a 4000 mile drive up there. With 2 drivers, it was a piece of cake. And the scenery was gorgeous! We did a lot of camping, and stayed in an occasional hotel.
But I tell you, this was a true test of our relationship. Being stuck together like glue for that long will test any relationship. But we only had a few disagreements on our travels. And we were gone for 70 days. Most people said “you are really lucky to be able to take that much time off.” Well, luck or not, we just decided we deserved it and did it. So many people have dreams, and put everybody and everything else before it. We are on this earth for a limited time, why not live out our dreams before it’s too late? My wife and I do that now and let me tell you, life is good. And when we accomplish one of our dreams, others are sometimes inspired. And others are sometimes envious.
Our destination in Alaska was Raven Acres in Palmer. Our buddy, James T. Kirk, has 80 acres up there with his family. His nutty Uncle Bill was building a log cabin and could use some help. So we worked on the cabin for some of the time up there which was really fun. What could be more fun than building a real log cabin up in the wilderness of Alaska, right? Some highlights of the trip include:
Overall we drove 12,000 miles on our trip. Our little Honda kicked some serious butt on the drive! We overloaded it with camping gear and it handled the 100s of miles of dirtroads in the Yukon with no problem.

HI,
I think it is wonderful that you spent 70 days living out your dream. I am planning on driving to Alaska in May 2007. I am meeting my friend in Prince George Canada and then we are driving from there. Unfortunately we are only going to have 2 weeks to do it all.
We figure that we will have 4 days in Alaska to see things, we are both into nature and not into tourist attractions. Is there anything that you would recommend for us to see?
I hope that you will enjoy your 2007 summer.
Nieves

Wow, only 4 days in Alaska, that’s a tough one. On the drive up check out Stewart Hyder for bear and salmon viewing. Denali is kinda touristy, but you’ll see just about every big animal Alaska has in the wild and you can do some great hikes in the park. Take the bus tour as early as you can to that last stop and get out for a while. Go to Valdez and do the kayak day trip (it’s easy paddling) to the glacier. It will blow your mind. We booked it with Anadyr http://www.anadyradventures.com/. The Matanuksa Glacier is awe inspiring and is maybe an hour drive from Palmer, and you’ll pass it on the drive into AK so it’d be a great stop. I also heard you can take a fan boat ride up the rivers and they drop you off to fish in the middle of nowhere. Saturday & Sunday market in Anchorage is cool too. Halibut fishing in Homer is awesome and you’ll catch your limit everytime. Hope that helps and thanks for the great comment!

Wow, I bumped into this blog by accident and just loved reading throught them. I was especially happy to read about your fun roadtrip to Alaska with your wife.
Back in 2000, my brother and I also made a roadtrip from California to Vancover, B.C. and it was really amazing! The Oregon coast was beautiful. The people in Portland and Vancouver were super nice. We also drove in our family Honda, 1988 Accord with no problems.
Some time in the future, I would like to visit Alaska too (maybe in a Hybrid car).
